Zeus and the alternatives

Comparisons by category. Products differ, so where something varies we say so.

How is Zeus different?

Browsers and desktop download managers are built for a person clicking links; command-line tools such as curl and wget are built for scripts. Zeus is designed for an AI assistant doing the downloading on your behalf: it offers MCP tools, resumes after crashes, can take over failed browser downloads, and asks you before using any login, because an AI must not be able to approve.

Zeus and your browser

When a long browser download fails, the browser usually has to start over, and your AI cannot use the browser’s downloader at all. With the Zeus extension, a failed download gets a “Finish with Zeus” offer, and Zeus continues from the bytes the browser already has when the server allows it.

Zeus and download managers

Desktop download managers resume and split downloads well. They were not designed for an AI caller, and some read cookies from the browser to handle logins without asking each time. Zeus gives your AI a small, safe set of tools, borrows a session only for a site you approve, keeps it in memory for at most 15 minutes, and records every use.

Zeus and curl or wget

curl and wget can resume downloads when given the right flags. An agent driving them has to remember those flags, handle expired links by itself, and get cookies by copying them into a command or a file, which is the kind of secret an AI should not hold. Zeus handles resuming and sessions itself and does not give your AI the cookies.

Zeus and Ogun

Zeus is for everyday downloads with your AI. Ogun, also by Verne, is a developer platform for data pipelines, data mining and agent benchmarks, built on the same download engine. Engineers building datasets should look at Ogun.

Try the pre-alpha

Zeus 0.0.1a is a pre-alpha release: try it in your browser on a private sandbox, or download it for Windows or Linux. Expect rough edges.
