What we did to the images

The photographs are real; we cut them out, balanced their light and gave them one colour family. We did not draw, repaint or generate anything in them.

  • The statues were cut from their backgrounds with an open background-removal model, then cleaned by hand-set rules: one solid outline, no holes, a thin edge band recoloured from the stone next to it.
  • Exposure is normalised over the stone only. Shadows lean ultramarine, highlights lean gold, and a little film grain is added.
  • Vases and reliefs are cut out the same way, and their clay and paint are mapped onto gold and navy. Engravings and line drawings are printed as ultramarine ink on marble-coloured paper.
  • The skies keep their brushwork. Warm paint stays gold, everything else becomes ultramarine, and the result is slightly softened.
  • The marble textures behind cards and lettering are drawn by a program from noise, so no photograph is behind them.

The whole treatment is a script, art/build.py, in the site repository, with the list of sources in art/sources.json. Only the processed files are published; the originals are downloaded again when the script runs. No image on this site was made by a text-to-image generator.
